River swimming safety: flow, cold and getting out
Research river conditions and access carefully; flow, hidden hazards and cold can make rivers unpredictable.
Rivers can have currents, changing depth, submerged obstacles, cold water and difficult banks. Water that looks calm at the surface can still move strongly. Weirs, locks and other structures create additional hazards; keep away from them.
Before choosing a river
Find out who manages the site and whether swimming is allowed. Check local signs, recent and forecast weather, water level or flow information where available, and a practical exit route. Avoid entering after conditions have changed or if you cannot assess the hazards. Go with experienced company and tell someone your plan.
Access and rules differ across the UK. In an inland emergency call 999 and ask for the appropriate emergency service. Follow instructions from the site manager and emergency services.
