Tides, currents and offshore winds for swimmers
Check local tide, wind and weather information and understand why conditions can affect entry, exit and visibility.
Tides, currents and wind can change the conditions at a coast or estuary. Wind can push a swimmer away from an intended exit, and waves or currents can make it harder to breathe or return to shore. A forecast cannot remove local uncertainty.
Before a coastal swim
- Check tide times, weather and local hazard information for the exact location.
- Choose a clear entry and exit and keep watching the exit point.
- Do not enter if conditions are beyond your ability or local advice says not to.
- Swim with others and carry a way to call for help.
Never float an inflatable in an offshore wind. For an emergency at the coast call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard. Inland waters have different hazards and emergency arrangements; check local advice.
