Warming up after a swim: what the guidance says

Prepare dry layers and shelter, and follow NHS guidance if someone may have hypothermia.

Have a dry change and sheltered place ready before you enter the water. After getting out, remove wet clothing, dry off and put on dry layers. Keep someone with you if they feel unwell. Cold-related illness can become serious.

Possible hypothermia

NHS guidance treats hypothermia as a medical emergency. Move the person to shelter, remove wet clothing, wrap them in dry blankets or towels and call for medical help. If fully awake, they may have a warm non-alcoholic drink. Do not give alcohol, use a hot bath or rub their arms and legs. Follow the full NHS guidance and emergency-service instructions.
