Why there is no ‘safe’ time in cold water
Why a fixed time limit cannot account for different people, water and conditions.
There is no single time in cold water that can be called safe for everyone. How a person responds varies, and conditions such as water and air temperature, wind, waves, exertion and the ability to get out can change the situation. A wetsuit or experience cannot guarantee protection.
Make a plan around conditions
Check the conditions, choose an exit you can reach, stay within your ability and get out before you feel you need to. Swim with others and tell someone your plan. If you feel unwell or notice a change in your ability, leave the water and seek help as needed.
For urgent cold-related symptoms, use NHS guidance and seek emergency care where appropriate. This is general safety information, not medical advice.
