UK wild swimming map: the Tarnbay shortlist

Explore 32 selected beaches, lake shores and open-water venues across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Find a place, then check its official information.

From a Highland loch to an organised city swim. Choose a nation or water type, then pick a pin to explore.

A shortlist, not a safety ranking. Each place has official visitor information and access notes. Check current conditions, local notices and any booking requirements before travelling.

Overview map made with Natural Earth public-domain boundaries. Ireland is shown for context. Pins show approximate visitor localities, not entry points; this is not a navigation map.

Check the current RNLI patrol calendar and flags; seasonal patrols are not year-round supervision. Follow beach rules and local notices.
                    Keep in mind
The council visitor page warns about rip currents. Check tides and conditions and use the flagged swimming area when patrolled.

Parking, toilets and refreshments. The visitor page says the Changing Places unit is unavailable; accessible toilets remain open.

A reservoir option with a defined booking process and lifeguard-assisted sessions, rather than an invitation to swim anywhere on the water.

                    Access & arrangements
Swimming is permitted only in designated areas during pre-booked organised sessions. Confirm eligibility and session availability with Welsh Water.
                    Keep in mind
Unauthorised reservoir swimming is prohibited. Hidden machinery and deep cold water make the managed-session boundary essential.

Visitor centre, cafe, accessible toilets and activity-centre changing rooms/showers are listed by the operator; check current availability.

                    Access & arrangements
NRW permits swimming from its car-park side, subject to restrictions. The north end is private; consult the on-site water-use panel.
                    Keep in mind
The site is unstaffed with poor mobile reception; water-skiing operates and restricted areas must be respected.

Parking, picnic area and toilets are listed by NRW; check current facility notices before visiting.

                    Access & arrangements
Read the authority's swimming guidance and on-site zoning. Organised events require separate arrangements; do not confuse other watersports permits with swimming rules.
                    Keep in mind
Cold water, rapidly changing weather, other lake users and occasional algae warnings require separate checks before a visit.

Public pay-and-display car parks and a lake warden office/contact are identified by the National Park.

                    What makes the shortlist?

We chose a manageable set of places across all four UK nations, balancing established swimming use, scenery, regional coverage and the quality of official visitor information. Managed venues are included alongside less formal shores because they offer a different way to experience outdoor swimming. This is an editorial selection, not a complete inventory or a claim that these are the UK's safest waters.

We left out places where we could not establish a swimming context from reliable information, places with a blanket swimming prohibition and locations included only for a dramatic jump or waterfall photograph. Nobody paid for a position. Numbered markers identify directory entries; they are not scores or rankings.

                    Before you choose a swim

                    • Read the access notes. An organised venue may require booking, an induction, particular equipment or swimming experience. A public shore is not necessarily supervised.
                    • Check current conditions. Weather, tides, algae, pollution warnings and access restrictions can change. Not every listed place is a designated bathing water, and monitoring is seasonal.
                    • Use the pin to understand the area. It is an approximate visitor locality, not a recommended water-entry point, parking instruction or route. Follow the official operator or authority's directions.
                    • Make a plan with support. Read our safety guidance, questions to ask a swim group and nation-by-nation access guide. Listing a place never approves a particular swim.

Source checks describe a review of published information, not a visit, water test or inspection. Each entry links to its evidence and the official water-quality service for its nation. To report a changed rule or incorrect detail, contact Tarnbay and include the place name and official source.
